Kieran Trippier takes fire at Sunderland during Newcastle fan event – Watch here

Kieran Trippier is a player who’s seen his fair share of fierce derbies.

From valiant performances in the Madrid derby for Atletico against Real, to big games for Spurs against Arsenal in the North London derby, he’s a man for the big occasion.

So with the next season set to host the first league Tyne-Wear derbies since 2016, Trippier looks to be relishing in the opportunity ahead for him and his teammates.

And he’s had some choice words that will make him a very popular figure amongst the Toon faithful ahead of the two big clashes next season.

Speaking alongside Fabian Schar and Sandro Tonali a fan event in Seoul today, Kieran Trippier didn’t hold back when asked about the upcoming Tyne and Wear derbies this coming season.

“I hope there are no children here, but the amount of s that I got off them last time, I can’t wait to beat them again, to be honest with you.

“But no, looking forward to playing them. I think it’s good for the city, as well. It’s good for them to get promoted, but it would also be nice to see them get relegated as well!”

Trippier’s already got experience in this fixture, having played 90 minutes against the Black Cats in our FA Cup tie back in early 2024, where we ran out 3-0 winners away at the Stadium of Light.

A win in the two fixtures next season will mark our first league derby win since August 2011, and with how much our players know this game means to the North East, three points will be paramount.

One last chance to boost his legacy

In the last 18 months, Trippier’s been the source of much speculation surrounding his future at St James’ Park.

Interest has emerged from the likes of Bayern Munich, Galatasaray and the Saudi Pro League, but Howe has gone all out to keep one of his most committed players at the club.

At 34 and entering the final year of his contract, Trippier has already earned hero status for what he’s done for the club since his arrival: the first player to truly back the current project, and a sensational performance in the Carabao Cup final certainly spring to mind.

But what a way it would be for Trippier to help us make more history at Sunderland’s expense, and playing a starring role in the process.

Might be his last year? I suspect so at 34 and out of contract in 2026, but he’s been a superb servant and doesn’t sound like a man going anywhere soon in this interview!
