Celtics owner set to buy WNBA team from Native American tribe and move it to Boston

A group led by Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca has reached a deal to buy the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun from the Mohegan Tribe and relocate the team to Boston as early as 2027.

Boston Celtics minority owner reportedly reaches a deal to bring a WNBA team to Boston.

According to the Boston Globe, a group led by Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca has reportedly reached an agreement to purchase the WNBA's Connecticut Sun and relocate the team to TD Garden, home of the Boston Celtics.

The relocation could be finalized as early as 2027.

Pagliuca is expected to pay a record $325 million to the Mohegan Tribe, current owners of the team, and invest an additional $100 million to build a new practice facility in Boston. This would mark the team's move from the tribe’s casino complex in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The Mohegan Tribe made history in January 2003 as the first Native American tribe to own a professional sports franchise.

If finalized, the $325 million sale would be the highest ever for a professional women’s sports team.
