'Real confidence': Newcastle make new breakthrough in striker deal as Liverpool prepare to react - journalist

Liverpool supporters are desperately awaiting news that Newcastle United will negotiate for the sale of Alexander Isak.

The Reds had an opening offer rejected by Newcastle for Isak on Friday, with the bid falling well short of the Magpies’ asking price.

While also needing to up the money involved, Liverpool know they have to wait for Newcastle to find a replacement for Isak before jumping in again.

The Toon are actively trying to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, but are facing stiff competition from Manchester United.

Sesko is said to be ’50/50′ over joining Newcastle, a decision which will have a major impact on Liverpool’s own transfer plans.

However, Sesko is not the only striker Eddie Howe is trying to sign. The Magpies have been locked in a stalemate over a move for Yoane Wissa from Brentford. And after weeks of nothing happening, it looks like Newcastle have finally made a breakthrough.

Yoane Wissa pursuit will not impact Alexander Isak

Liverpool fans have become cheerleaders for Newcastle’s transfer business over the weekend, as they hope for Isak to become surplus to requirements.

But although journalist Craig Hope delivered good news on the Wissa front on Sunday morning, he says that it will actually have little to no impact on Isak being allowed to leave.

“The strongest information I’ve had to me in the last 12 hours is that we expect movement on the Yoane Wissa deal, there’s real confidence there,” Hope told his YouTube channel.

“I feel and my interpretation is that Wissa will happen now. But if he does arrive on Tyneside next week or next weekend, and that is the hope, there are people really pushing for that on every side of the deal, he isn’t Alexander Isak’s replacement.”

“If there’s progress on Wissa in the next 48, 72 hours, that doesn’t mean Liverpool then come back in for Isak,” the journalist claims.

“I think Liverpool know the big one they’ve got to see is Newcastle signing that Isak replacement, and that’s where Sesko comes into it.”

Big week ahead in Isak chase

Although Wissa does not appear to be directly linked to Isak, it will surely have at least a little bearing on Newcastle’s willingness to sell.

🚨 Benjamin Šeško’s agent, arrived in Leipzig ahead of key moment for final decision over new club.

Manchester United told RB Leipzig again on Saturday: an official bid will follow after Newcastle’s one… if Šeško opens doors to the move.

The Brentford man hit 19 Premier League goals last season and is potentially good enough to be Newcastle’s leading striker.

While Howe still wants a big-money, statement signing like Sesko, having Wissa through the door is surely better than nothing.

Either way, it is set to be a very big week in this transfer merry-go-round. Sesko will likely make his decision in the coming days, which will be the biggest signal over whether Liverpool can sign Isak.

If it is bad news for Newcastle, it is bad news for Liverpool.
