'Good luck': Alan Shearer reacts as Callum Wilson joins West Ham after leaving Newcastle

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer, as well as a number of current players, were delighted for Callum Wilson after his move to West Ham was confirmed.

Wilson joined West Ham on Saturday, weeks after rejecting the chance to stay at Newcastle United.

Newcastle were in talks with Wilson about extending his contract, which expired earlier this summer.

There were discussions about an incentivised new deal at St James’ Park for a player who joined the club in 2020 and scored 49 goals in 130 games for the club.

He, however, snubbed that idea and undertook punditry duties in America for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 before joining West Ham.

A number of his former teammates were delighted for Wilson.

Why Newcastle United wanted to keep Callum Wilson

Wilson endured a difficult season last time out, scoring only one goal in 22 appearances and starting just three games across all competitions.

Still, Eddie Howe had a great relationship with Wilson, having worked with him at Bournemouth prior to his appointment on Tyneside.

Indeed, Newcastle wanted to keep Wilson as they knew how difficult it would be to replace him.

That has certainly proven to be the case this summer. Newcastle are struggling to sign players, although clearly there is still a lot of time to change that.

Yoane Wissa has been lined up as Wilson’s replacement at Newcastle but the club have so far been unable to agree a fee with Brentford.
