Brazil have been crowned Copa America Femenina champions for the ninth time, at the expense of West Ham United star Manuela Pavi's Colombia after an unforgettable final.
Colombia more than played their part in an eight-goal thriller, which ended 4–4 after extra time, before Brazil edged the penalty shootout 5–4 to claim the title once again.
The match was a rollercoaster of moments - and one littered with controversial moments, including a headbutt from Pavi's teammate Jorelyn Carabalí on Brazilian forward Gio Garbelini - with both teams taking and surrendering leads in what will go down as one of the most thrilling finals in the competition’s history.
Colombia struck first through Linda Caicedo in the 25th minute, only for Brazil to respond almost immediately. The back-and-forth continued as a Tarciane own goal and a thunderous effort from Mayra Ramirez gave Colombia two further leads, while Marta’s extra-time strike looked to have sealed it for Brazil.
Yet Leicy Santos equalised with a stunning free kick in the 115th minute to make it 4-4 and force penalties.
West Ham United’s Pavi had a bittersweet end to an otherwise impactful tournament. While she didn’t start the final, she was introduced as a substitute to add energy in the second half and extra time. However, it was in the penalty shootout that Pavi’s night took a painful turn.
Having successfully converted a penalty in the semi-final shootout against Argentina, Pavi stepped up again in the final. This time, however, her attempt was saved — a pivotal miss that handed the momentum to Brazil.
It was a moment of heartbreak for the young winger, whose confidence and composure had been key to Colombia’s journey throughout the tournament.
Despite the final disappointment, Pavi’s performances over the course of the Copa America have proved her to be a valuable player in Colombia’s campaign. She now heads back to Chadwell heath to begin pre season preparations.
