Burnley Forward Closing on League Two Return

Burnley forward Michael Mellon is closing on another loan spell in the fourth tier. The 21-year-old spent the second half of last season with Bradford City and scored two goals for the Bantams in 15 appearances.

Mellon is yet to make a senior appearance for the Clarets and failed to make an impact with League One Stockport County in the first half of last season.

Scotland Under-21 International Returning to League Two

The former Manchester United academy player has made multiple appearances for Scotland at under-21 level but will be looking to relaunch his career after failing to build on the potential displayed while on loan with Morecambe for 18 months in 2023/24.

15 goals in 35 appearances for the Shrimps represented an excellent return, and Mellon scored a winner in an FA Cup first-round win over Lincoln City during his spell. Morecambe reached the third round in that campaign ith Mellon a key figure in that run.

Spells at Dundee in Scotland, Stockport County and Bradford City have yielded just 33 outings and five goals. A return to League Two is almost on the cards in a bid to relaunch the player’s career.

Walsall Close in Burnley Forward

Mat Sadler’s Walsall collapsed from the top of the fourth tier to miss out on promotion entirely last season. However, they have started this campaign on the right track by beating Swindon Town 2-1 in their season opener. A late goal from Connor Barrett sealed all three points.

New signing Aaron Pressley made his debut in attack, but there does appear to be space for another face to partner the former Stevenage man, and Alan Nixon (paywall) is reporting that Walsall are trying to agree a loan deal with Burnley for Mellon.

Bournemouth loanee Jonny Stuttle started the win over Swindon Town. The 19-year-old has potential, but this weekend was his EFL debut, and having another player with experience at this level as competition may help to aid his development and increase competition.

Jamille Matt was an unused substitute this weekend, and the 35-year-old is another strong option, having scored 12 goals in League Two for Walsall last season.

Burnley forward Mellon would appear to have a strong opportunity to play regularly in this Walsall side should he join. It is a move that would suit all parties, but as Nixon reports, there are several EFL clubs interested in his signature, so the loan is not a done deal.
