'Continue to support the boys' - Ramsdale sends message to Saints after exit

GOALKEEPER Aaron Ramsdale admitted he will continue to support Saints on their promotion "mission" after joining Newcastle United on loan.

England hopeful Ramsdale has returned to the Premier League on an initial loan deal with an option to buy after just one season at St Mary's.

Newcastle are covering all his wages and paying a £4million fee, lightening the load on Southampton's finances in the Championship.

On social media, Ramsdale wrote: "Thanks to everyone connected to the football club (Southampton).

Ramsdale will work with former boss Eddie Howe for the second time in his career at Newcastle, and admitted the English coach was a big attraction for him.

The pair previously worked together at AFC Bournemouth and will now be competing in the Champions League.

"I think it's only Chris Wilder who has had a similar influence on my career (as Eddie Howe and his coaching staff)," he added.

"The gaffer turned me from a man to a professional footballer. He showed me the ropes and disciplined me when needed.

"The manager was a huge swaying point for me. We've been in contact over the years. He's someone I have huge respect for."

Asked if he can rediscover his form at Newcastle, Ramsdale added: "For sure. It was difficult for us as a football club last year.

"The lows were low and the highs weren't very high. It's about me getting back to finding myself in a team competing at the other end of the table.

"I know I can still compete with my quality. With a platform like this, I've got all the tools here to be able to do that.

"I know I can get back to where I was, hopefully it happens this year. I'd love to be on that plane for the World Cup. I know how hard it's going to be.

"But that's a consequence of how I do here. I'm not looking too far forward. First of all, I need to fight for this number one spot."
