Ruben Amorim appraises player with ‘characteristics we have missed last season’

Things can only get better for **Man United**this year, but they must build the firm foundations of a stronger squad. Manager **Ruben Amorim**is happy with the recruits, and he has spoken in glowing terms to **MUTV**about the arrival of one attacker in preseason with "characteristics we have missed."

‘The character is important’

**Man United**finished in fifteenth place last campaign with the fifth lowest tally of goals, scoring 44 times in 38 fixtures. They needed a radical revamp that was not possible with a simple change of leadership in the dugout from **Erik ten Hag**to Ruben Amorim. More men of quality were needed.

The Red Devils have spent about £130 million in this transfer window on only three players: two Premier League proven forwards and a cheap £6 million gamble on an 18-year-old left wing-back from Paraguay. For an institution that has wasted funds in the past, the key is a clear recruitment plan.

*“More than the results is the way we perform. It can help to give confidence and I think the group is really good. I think we can give so much more with the same players and then all the work that we did before buying Matheus Cunha, **Bryan Mbeumo*and Diego Leon, all that work behind the scenes.”

The manager made clear he is happy with all three incomings and the process that led to their arrival.

“To know the players, to talk with people that played with the guys was important because they are everything that we were expecting. great guys and great players. I think we are in a good moment.”

On top of the 15 strikes from Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, who will turn 26 next week, netted 20 times for **Brentford**last season. The pair, along with Leon, should have many years of service for the club. However, Amorim asserted that talent will only take the group so far on their journey of improvement.

“It's not just how they play. It's important how they play because that is the job but the character is important. We took a lot of time to know the players to talk with everybody before we brought them to our group. That is going to be like a rule. It will be massive in our decision when we bring a player.”

Cunha came to the club as the first summer signing in the middle of June for a fee reported as £62.5 million from Wolves. He hit double-digit goals for the team in his last two years in the Black Country (12 in 2023/24 and 15 last term), but the goals are not the only reason he was attractive to Amorim.

“He's a loud guy. That’s important in this moment. When he's upset, you feel it in the environment,. especially when he play some games and lose. He has characteristics we have missed last season.”

With the clarity of the work behind the scenes, the 40-year-old thinks the three are integrating well.

“The first thing I was confident already because I knew what to do, our path, what I need to do in the first training. So that can give you a certain confidence. We had Matheus, we had a clear idea what type of group we wanted and also that feeling that the pressure is on and we have to deliver this year.”

At the same time, Amorim is aware that the project will only work as well as the players can deliver the goods. He sees the arrivals as players with individuality to spark the side and supporters into life.

“Sometimes we have to look to the past and reasons for the success. Football changes, and the world changes, but there are some things that we can get from that. I think that is the spirit of the players.”

The manager mentioned two men whom he is backing to bring a feel-good factor to Old Trafford.

“When I go to Old Trafford and we show a good performance like we did against Real Sociedad for the people, I feel the excitement of everybody. I think they deserve to have guys like Matheus, Bruno and all these guys that can lift that that place.”
