Newcastle United showed their respect for the work of Son Heung-min as he was substituted in his final Spurs game.
The match provided both Premier League sides the perfect opportunity to get more minutes under the belt ahead of the start of the upcoming campaign but doubled up as a farewell for Son, who confirmed his decision to leave Tottenham Hotspur after 10 years this summer.
Son is set to move to the MLS and played what are expected to be his last minutes in a Spurs shirt against the Magpies. The forward looked desperate to get on the scoresheet, but didn’t have time to do so in the 64 minutes he had on the pitch, leaving with the scores at 1-1 thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson and Harvey Barnes.
Son Heung-min given emotional farewell against Newcastle United
Son was tearful as he walked off the pitch, being hugged by his Tottenham Hotspur teammates on the field. The Newcastle United stars also showed their appreciation for the Premier League legend, with Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes two of the first to rush up and shake hands with the player.
The Magpies then won the hearts of Spurs fans with Dan Burn, William Osula, Lewis Miley, Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes all joining Tottenham Hotspur players in making a tunnel for Son to run through as he left the pitch.
Son went on to embrace manager Thomas Frank as play was halted for several minutes to give the winger his moment in the spotlight as he closes his Tottenham chapter. The forward was then caught on camera with his hands across his face catching tears after the emotional goodbye.
Son explains Spurs decision
Speaking to the media last week, the player said: “Before we start the press conference, I wanted to say I have decided to leave the Club this summer. Respectfully the club is helping me with this decision. It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. Such amazing memories. It was so hard to make the decision.
"I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change - 10 years is a long time. I came to north London as a kid, 23 years old, such a young age. I leave this club as a grown man, a very proud man.
"I want to say thank you to all the Spurs fans for giving me so much love. I hope the goodbye is also good timing and this is the right time to make that decision. I hope everyone can accept that and respect that."
