Amorim'won over'by star in training despite interest from Blues in transfer

Kobbie Mainoo is said to have won over Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim in training, with a transfer to Chelsea now deemed less likely.

The Red Devils have enjoyed a productive pre-season campaign so far, and they will hope to continue their strong performances on Sunday evening against Everton.

Amorim could deploy both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo against the Toffees, with the duo joining the manager's ranks after exceptional 2024-25 campaigns in the Premier League.

Any further expenditure could be impacted by sales due to the poor financial health of the club, and there were fears that United may have to sell young stars such as Mainoo, who was not always in favour with Amorim.

A report from Football Insider now claims that Mainoo's performances in training have impressed the United boss, and the English midfielder is now seen as a valuable member of the squad for next season.

Where does Mainoo's future lie under Amorim?

Mainoo is arguably the only midfielder at the club comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, and his presence during buildup phases could be vital in 2025-26.

The 20-year-old is not a specialist number six, so perhaps he would be at his best playing alongside a defensive midfielder.

Despite his talents, Mainoo may have to settle for a place on the substitute's bench given Bruno Fernandes will likely be deployed in a deeper role, and he would almost certainly block the Englishman's pathway into the XI.

The youngster has previously been utilised in a more advanced role, and given his young age, he could still develop the offensive side of his game.

Who can United sell to raise funds for their summer business?

United's failure to qualify for Europe in 2024-25 has reportedly left the club struggling to fund their summer transfer window, with their latest deal for Mbeumo a protracted affair.

Amorim is said to still be keen on bringing in a midfielder, though it is hard to see how they can afford to sign one while also acquiring a striker.

Selling Mainoo would have helped significantly in terms of complying with profit and sustainability rules (PSR) due to his homegrown status, though the club could still look to offload Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentine has not been allowed to train with the first team, and with Chelsea said to hold an interest in his signature, a deal could be reached that would satisfy all parties.
