Four winners and four losers from Manchester United’s 2-2 draw vs Everton

Manchester United drew with Everton in pre-season in Atlanta in the club’s final US tour game of 2025.

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United lifted the Premier League Summer Series trophy, after going unbeaten on tour.

United beat West Ham and Bournemouth, before drawing 2-2 with Everton. Let’s dig into the winners and losers from the contest.

Winners

Mason Mount: Former Chelsea star Mason Mount is determined not to become Manchester United’s forgotten man.

Mount came off the bench in the 57th minute, and 12 minutes later he had curled a sweet shot into the bottom corner of the net.

It was his first goal of pre-season, and a welcome one. United want Mount to fight for his place and make an impact, competition for places is a good thing, and he now just has to stay fit.

Leny Yoro: Entering his second season at the club, Leny Yoro looked like an absolute class act in defence for United.

Showing power when needed to compete with a physical Everton side, Yoro showed quick and nimble feet when needed too, dribbling past opponents, and also had some impressive touches inside the Everton box.

It’s also notable that he avoided injury, unlike last season’s disastrous pre-season tour.

Bryan Mbeumo: Manchester United’s newest signing made his first appearance for the club and he was excellent against Everton.

In just 45 minutes, Mbeumo impressed, with fans saying he was ‘worth the wait’ after a long transfer saga.

He was direct, quick, and unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions in the first half. The best is yet to come.

Ruben Amorim: This draw might just have been perfect for Ruben Amorim, as it gives his side plenty to work on and avoids everybody getting carried away.

United stayed unbeaten and even lifted a trophy, yet also landed a little reality check, with Everton exposing that any mistakes will be capitalised on.

It is better to receive a little ‘wake up call’ now than during the season, and United will be better prepared for the Premier League for this.

Losers

Manuel Ugarte: Uruguay midfielder Manuel Ugarte was at fault for Everton’s first goal and it was not his only sloppy moment either.

United need to have a midfielder who is comfortable in possession and able to dictate play, and Ugarte lacks these attributes; it’s why PSG moved him on.

Ugarte is useful in games where United are up against it away from home, but in matches where more is expected in possession, his weaknesses can be exposed. This match underlined calls that United need another midfielder.

Diogo Dalot: Patrick Dorgu was outstanding in Manchester United’s win over Bournemouth in the previous game, and with Diogo Dalot starting on the left, the team’s attack was unbalanced.

Most of United’s best work in the first half came down Amad’s right side, with Dalot unable to offer anything going forward.

Dorgu came on for the second half and came close to producing a winner in the closing stages.

Rasmus Hojlund: In the last game Rasmus Hojlund scored the opener and made a big deal of his status in the team, declaring that he does not intend to leave the club.

This match was more of a reality check for him. United’s new signings of Mbeumo and Cunha saw him moved to the bench, and a further signing of Benjamin Sesko would further limit his opportunities.

Hojlund came off the bench to play the final 18 minutes but had no impact. Spare a thought too for Chido Obi, Diego Leon and Ethan Williams who did not make it off the bench.

Altay Bayindir: Tom Heaton was rested for this game, with Altay Bayindir stepping up to audition for his spot if Andre Onana misses games with injury.

Bayindir did little to inspire confidence, a spectator for both Everton goals. Manchester United need a shake-up of the goalkeeper department arguably even more than striker.
