West Ham are showing an ‘interest’ in Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to CaughtOffside. The report claims that Crystal Palace and Leeds United are also admirers of the player, along with Atletico Madrid and Southampton. The Saints could face a real battle to keep hold of him over the coming weeks.
Fernandes, 21, has been with his current club since joining them back in August 2024. He has since made 42 appearances in all competitions, 36 of which came in the Premier League, and he has chipped in with two goals. Prior to his move to England, he spent time on the books at Sporting Lisbon.
The 3AM verdict: West Ham could see Fernandes as someone to add more competition and depth to their midfield department. If he joined, he would give them something different to pick from in the middle of the park. He is still only 21 and has bags of potential. Graham Potter will be under pressure to get results from the off in the new season and needs to get his recruitment right.
Manchester United hold Benjamin Sesko talks
Manchester United are holding ‘talks’ with representatives of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, according to Sky Sports. The Red Devils are trying to snap up the Bundesliga hotshot this summer. Ruben Amorim is preparing for his first full season in charge at Old Trafford.
Sesko moved to Germany back in 2023 and has since adapted well to life at the Red Bull Arena. He has scored 39 goals in 87 matches altogether but his situation is up in the air amid attention from elsewhere. The 22-year-old has made 41 caps for Slovenia in his career to date as well.
The 3AM verdict: Benjamin Sesko would be ideal for Manchester United if they were able to secure his signature. He is young, has potential to develop and has proved over in Germany that he can score goals. The Red Devils need to add more firepower to their ranks at the top end of the pitch and the 22-year-old would fit the bill perfectly.
Sunderland may revive interest in Dmytro Riznyk
Journalist Alan Nixon has claimed on his Patreon page that Sunderland may revive their ‘interest’ in Shakhtar Donetsk goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk. The Black Cats have been linked with a swoop for the stopper in this window. They are gearing up for life in the top flight after winning promotion from the Championship.
Regis Le Bris could see Riznyk as someone to battle it out for their number one jersey. The 26-year-old, who has two caps under his belt for Ukraine, rose up through the ranks at Vorskla Poltava and became their first choice as a youngster. Shakhtar snapped him up back in 2023 and he has since featured on 79 occasions.
The 3AM verdict: Sunderland will be in for a tough campaign after winning promotion from the Football League. They must ensure that they bring in the right type of players as they look to adapt to the step up in quality from the second tier. Dmytro Riznyk has experience of playing for a decent sized club in Shakhtar Donetsk. However, the fact he has never played in England before means getting him would be a bit of a risk.
