‘We are Newcastle United!’ – Eddie Howe talks about Alexander Isak and what will happen this week

Alexander Isak returned to Tyneside at the weekend.

Sky Sports revealing he had flown back from Spain.

The Newcastle United striker having been working with his own personal trainer on fitness ahead of the new season, as well as getting over his ‘injury’ issue.

The Sweden international’s old club Real Sociedad allowing Alexander Isak to use their training facilities.

What happens next though?

For all the speculation, Newcastle United still haven’t signed any striker(s) to play alongside, or replace, Alexander Isak.

Whilst the only formal bid for Isak has been the derisory £110m offer from Liverpool that was dismissed out of hand.

After Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham, Eddie Howe asked if Alexander Isak would be training with the rest of the Newcastle United squad this coming week, ahead of the last two friendlies of pre-season on Friday and Saturday at St James’ Park?

Eddie Howe:

“You have to earn the right to train with us.

“We are Newcastle United.

“The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team, to be part of a squad.

“You have to act in the right way.

“So that is also at play here.

“We will make sure that any player does that, to earn the right to train with the rest of the group.

“No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.

“Of course I’d like him to be at training but whether he will, I don’t know at this moment in time.

“We have been here (in South Korea) with the time difference, preparing for training and for games.

“Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home.”

Eddie Howe also talking about the actual game, a very decent display from Newcastle United, a match they deserved to win against Tottenham:

“Another really competitive game.

“Quite strong both teams, in the sense of some good challenges.

“A very Premier League-like game, which again, you want at this stage.

“We are building and I think it was an improved performance again from us.

“Good response to a difficult opening to the game (when Newcastle conceded inside four minutes).

“I thought that we were the better team in the first half.

“The second half was probably more even.

“Delighted with how the players responded today and how we looked physically.

“We conceded that goal really early but a really strong response.

“Which is what we are going to need (in the new season) and we did that really well last year.

“Delighted with the players today, delighted with the effort and commitment.”
