Swansea City target Premier League midfielder along with Oxford United

Swansea City are interested in Liverpool midfielder James McConnell along with Oxford United, as detailed in a report by the LiverpoolEcho.

Swansea City are being linked with a move for the Premier League man this summer. The Swans are gearing up for another year in the Championship.

McConnell, 20, has been on the books at Anfield since 2019. He is poised to sign a new deal.

In this latest update regarding his situation, the LiverpoolEcho claim Alan Sheehan’s side want him on loan along with Oxford United. West Brom, Derby County and Ipswich Town have also been mentioned as potential suitors, along with Metz in France.

Former EFL player Don Goodman has recently delivered his verdict on McConnell, as per Football League World: “He hasn’t been sent out on loan by Liverpool yet, and I do think the reason for that is because they rate him so highly that he’s probably been on the periphery of breaking through into the first team squad on a more regular basis. So he’s a player that, when I saw come on at Wembley, not last season the season before in the Carabao Cup final when they beat Chelsea, I thought ‘wow, who is this?”

Swansea City could see McConnell as someone to boost their midfield department. If he joined, he would offer the Swans more competition and depth in the middle of the park.

The England youth international joined Liverpool six years ago. Prior to his move to Merseyside, he rose up through the academy at Sunderland.

McConnell penned first professional terms with the Reds at the age of 17. He made his senior debut back in October 2023 against Toulouse in the Europa League under Jurgen Klopp.

The Newcastle-born man has since made 16 appearances in all competitions for the current top flight champions. However, he only featured on four occasions in the last campaign.

What now for Swansea City and James McConnell?

Swansea City face competition from elsewhere if they are to secure McConnell’s services from Liverpool. Oxford United are said to be in the frame along with West Brom, Derby County, Ipswich Town and Metz.

The Swans should fancy their chances of getting him though as he would fit their style of play. He would also be guaranteed regular minutes in Wales.

Sheehan was handed the full-time job earlier this year after his impressive spell in caretaker charge after Luke Williams’ exit. The Welsh outfit face a tricky away trip to the Riverside Stadium this weekend to face Middlesbrough as they look to start the new term with a positive result on their travels.
