Luka Doncic’s future with the Lakers took a big step this offseason with his new extension. By 2028, he could qualify for a very uncommon contract feature that only a few NBA stars have.
Luka Doncic future with the Los Angeles Lakers just got a big boost this offseason—and it could come with one of the NBA’s rarest contract perks: a full no-trade clause.

Height: 201 cm
Weight: 104 kg
Birth place: Ljubljana, Slovenia
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Doncic is on track to become eligible for a no-trade clause once he hits unrestricted free agency in 2028.
While current league rules don’t allow no-trade clauses on contract extensions, Luka would qualify if he signs a brand-new deal at that point.
To get this clause, a player needs at least eight years in the NBA and four full seasons with the same team.
Although Doncic was traded to the Lakers midway through the 2024-25 season, Stein says he will count as a four-year Laker by summer 2028 because he will have completed four straight full seasons in LA.

Doncic recently agreed to a three-year, $165 million extension that includes a player option for the 2028-29 season.
If he declines that option, he’ll hit free agency with eligibility not just for a supermax deal but also for a no-trade clause—the same kind of power currently held by only two active players: LeBron James and Damian Lillard.
Already, the 26-year-old star is shaping the Lakers’ future. He was a big part of bringing Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton to LA this summer.
Looking ahead, if Doncic stays with the Lakers in 2028, he could sign a historic five-year supermax deal worth up to $417 million—the biggest contract in NBA history.
