Alexander Isak is set for showdown talks with Eddie Howe at Newcastle United's training ground after returning to Tyneside.

The wantaway striker had been training at his old club Real Sociedad after missing United's pre-season tour to the Far East.

Isak complained of a thigh injury, but it was his desire to explore a potential transfer to Liverpool that ultimately saw him not fly out to Singapore and South Korea. Newcastle played three games while on tour, against Arsenal, K-League and Tottenham Hotspur.

He returned to Tyneside this morning, according to Sky Sports, and with Newcastle having landed back in the North East after flying out from Seoul immediately after the Spurs game, Howe is expected to meet with the Swedish striker to thrash out the situation and understand better what Isak's thoughts are.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie posted on X: "Alexander Isak has returned to the Newcastle United training ground this morning following his solo trip to recover/train in Spain.

"The #NUFC first team squad landed back in the North East earlier this morning. Isak is set to meet Eddie Howe after pulling out of their pre-season trip to Singapore & Korea."

Howe, by his own admission, has been a little out of the loop with Isak as he focused on the games and training in Asia. With the time difference and the distance, and also the constant developments, he has often heard updates from the media.

However, he is also adamant that Isak won't return to training with the squad unless his attitude and desire matches the rest of the group, which he will stress to the player when they meet at Benton.

"There is also another way to look at this," Howe said after the Spurs game. "You have to earn the right to train with us. We’re Newcastle United.

"The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad - you have to act in the right way.

"So that is also at play here. We will make sure that any player does that to earn the right to train with the group.

"No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal."
