According to Marc Stein’s latest report on The Stein Line, “league insiders are questioning whether a max extension is a foregone conclusion for San Antonio.” That’s despite Fox’s solid play since arriving at the 2025 trade deadline.
The 27-year-old point guard averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists in 17 games with the Spurs after coming over in a three-team deal that cost the franchise valuable draft picks and young talent.
He’s now entering the final year of his five-year, $163 million deal, and an extension could soon be on the table.
But San Antonio’s recent draft choices may be giving the front office second thoughts.

The 2024–25 Rookie of the Year, Stephon Castle, made a strong case to be the team’s future lead guard. Castle posted 14.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.7 rebounds across 81 games last season.
He started in 47 of those contests and impressed with his poise and two-way game at just 20 years old.
The Spurs also selected Dylan Harper with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Harper, a highly skilled playmaker from Rutgers, averaged 19.4 points and 4.0 assists as a freshman.
His ability to run the offense, alongside Castle’s growth, signals a clear shift toward a younger backcourt core.
Fox, meanwhile, has built a strong résumé since entering the league in 2017. He owns career averages of 21.5 points and 6.1 assists per game and has made both an All-Star team and an All-NBA squad. But now, the question is less about talent and more about fit.
