Newcastle United new boy Baran Yildiz marked his debut for the club's Under-21 side with a goal in a 5-0 victory over South Shields on Sunday.

The 18-year-old officially joined United this summer from Genclerbirligi Ankara, and will be assessed over the summer before any decision is made on the next steps of his progress.

However, he made a positive first impression against the Mariners, netting in the closing stages as United turned a two-goal lead into a comfortable victory.

Newcastle had taken an early lead thanks to a goal from Joe Brayson, with another U21 debutant, Kacey Wooster, grabbing a double.

Trevan Sanusi completed the scoring in the late stages to give the young United side an impressive win.

United fielded several stars on the brink of the first-team squad, with Leo Shahar playing the full 90 minutes.

Australian international Garang Kuol played the first half, with the winger's future up in the air this summer.

He has had loan spells at Hearts and Voldendam but his United career has yet to take off despite arriving from Central Coast Mariners with much promise.

Significantly, he was left out of the party which travelled to Singapore and South Korea for games against Arsenal, Tottenham and a K-League XI, while the likes of Alfie Harrison, Travis Hernes and Sean Neave were included.

Newcastle United U21s: Harris, Shahar, Trialist (Watts 76), Heffernan (Thompson 59), McArthur, Charlton (Bryant 59), Harper (Yildiz 59), Bailey, Sanusi, Kuol (Fitzgerald 46), Brayson (Wooster 46).

Not used: Adam Harrison.
