Liverpool have confirmed the capture of talented 17-year-old striker Will Wright, pipping Arsenal to the signature of the former Salford City forward.
Wright appeared to be on his way to the Emirates Stadium after Arsenal agreed a fee of £200,000 plus add-ons with Salford City, but the Gunners never agreed personal terms with the striker.
As a result, Liverpool swooped in and successfully hijacked their rivals' dealfor the teenage phenom, shaking hands with Salford on a fee and also striking an agreement with the player himself.
Wright was reportedly keen to remain in the North West rather than head down to the English capital, and Liverpool have now announced the signing of the 17-year-old, who will continue his development in their academy ranks.
"Liverpool FC have completed the signing of Will Wright from Salford City," a club statement read. "He linked up with Rob Page’s Liverpool U21s squad last week and made his first appearance on Saturday, featuring for the final half-hour of a goalless draw with Hull City at the Academy."
Wright made four senior appearances for Salford in the 2024-25 season, including a late cameo off the bench in their 8-0 annihilation at the hands of Manchester City in the third round of the FA Cup.
Liverpool sign Wright: Will Alexander Isak follow?
Alexander Isak in action for Newcastle United on May 25, 2025
In Wright, Liverpool believe that they have signed a player who could blossom into one of England's most talented strikers, maybe even reaching Alexander Isak levels of notoriety.
The Reds' potential record-breaking move for the Newcastle United man is currently dominating the talk of the transfer window, although the Magpies emphatically turned down a first bid worth £110m from the English champions.
A second offer is not believed to be imminent from Liverpool, but they have not completely lost sight of the Sweden international, who has reported back for pre-season training after missing Newcastle's tour of Asia amid the speculation.
While Liverpool plan their next move, Newcastle are scoping out possible replacements for Isak and are understood to have reignited their interest in a 33-goal striker after failing with a first proposal for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko.
If the Magpies are successful in bringing a new big-money centre-forward to the club, the door will open for Isak to move to Anfield, but only if Liverpool agree to pay at least £120m and potentially up to £150m.
The former Real Sociedad man would displace Darwin Nunez at the tip of the Liverpool attack, and one of the heavyweights from the Saudi Pro League are said to have stepped up their interestin the Uruguayan.
