Report: Newcastle United 'progressing' in talks to sell £4m veteran to Premier League side

Newcastle United are in talks with Burnley over the sale of one of their longstanding players, who is desperate for more first-team football.

Throughout the summer transfer window, a lot of attention has been on Alexander Isak’s future on Tyneside. The Swede could leave Newcastle United this summer, but the likes of Liverpool are yet to make a suitable bid for him.

Isak is at Newcastle’s training ground for talks with Eddie Howe, and the situation should become clearer later on this week. While Isak’s future has taken headlines in recent weeks, Newcastle have also sold and released multiple players this summer.

Callum Wilson has signed for West Ham United after being released by Newcastle last month. The 33-year-old is believed to be on a heavily incentivised deal at the Hammers and gets his wish of staying in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Sean Longstaff joined Leeds United for £15million in July. The midfielder was an academy graduate at Newcastle and made 171 Premier League appearances. Now, it looks like Newcastle are set to sell another veteran this summer, with Burnley in talks for a player who joined under Rafa Benitez in 2018.

Martin Dubravka closing in on move to Burnley

After seven years on Tyneside, Martin Dubravka will undoubtedly go down as one of Newcastle’s best-ever goalkeepers. The 36-year-old has made 179 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies, and was still a big part of Howe’s side last season while Nick Pope was out injured.

However, it is clear that Dubravka has no future at Newcastle after the signing of Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton.

Reports have stated that Dubravka still wants to be a first-choice goalkeeper, but he will not get that at Newcastle. According to Sky Sports, the Magpies are now in talks with Burnley over a permanent deal for the Slovakian international.

Dubravka has just one year left on his current deal after signing a new contract in February, and Newcastle are now set to cash in on whatever transfer fee they can still get for him this summer.

Talks between the two clubs are believed to be progressing, but a deal is yet to be reached.

Martin Dubravka is Burnley’s replacement for James Trafford

As well as Dubravka, there is an expectation that Odysseas Vlachodimos will leave Newcastle on loan this summer. He joined the Magpies for around £20million last summer but made just one appearance in the Carabao Cup.

Before Ramsdale, Newcastle were seriously interested in signing James Trafford from Burnley. The Magpies made several offers for the young shot-stopper, but an agreement could not be reached.

Trafford has since signed for Manchester City, his former club, leaving Burnley without a first-choice goalkeeper.

Dubravka will be Burnley’s replacement for Trafford, but they will surely have another problem on their hands in the next season or two with Dubravka nearing the end of his career.

Dubravka was initially missing from Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia amid transfer speculation, but was reinstated shortly after.
