Man United have just discovered harsh Jadon Sancho transfer reality

There had been some suggestions that Jadon Sancho could be given yet another chance at Manchester United when he failed to complete negotiations with Chelsea.

Enzo Maresca's inability to reach a compromise on wages with Sancho cost his club £5m in penalty fees but it could yet cost United even more. There is a general understanding that the Reds are needing to sell players in order to buy further reinforcements for the new season.

Benjamin Sesko is the clear priority and it seems that United should discover this week if the Slovenian wishes to join them or Newcastle in the summer transfer window. Even if he were to choose the Magpies, United would likely shift their focus to another forward so the ability to sell the likes of Sancho is crucial.

Unfortunately for United, they have been unable to find a club that is willing to splash the £20m, at least, which would convince the Reds to sell and avoid them damaging their Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) position. However, on Monday it appears United's fail safe Sancho option has shown their hand.

Speaking to Sky Sport Deutschland, Dortmund's sporting director Sebastian Kehl revealed that Sancho was a player they are pondering a move for in the summer transfer window. "[Jadon] is constantly being linked with us," he explained.

"I understand the desire. We’re thinking about it within our possibilities.

"The conditions have to be right. We will definitely do something, but we’re limited."

While their interest in Sancho will be welcomed by United, their words perhaps symbolise the harsh reality of the situation for the Reds. Kehl's comments suggest that a bid which is enough to persuade the club to sell is unlikely to be forthcoming.

Instead, it appears Dortmund will try to sign Sancho on loan, perhaps with another obligation to pay a reduced rate in 2026 when the 25-year-old will be out of contract. That figure would ultimately be a smidge of the fee United are currently demanding but their negotiating position will be weak considering that the winger can walk away for nothing at the end of the forthcoming season.

At the moment, if United are to get Sancho off their books, this appears to be the only option available to them. The harsh reality is, unless a club tries to gazump their rivals in the market, this is the only way of getting the winger to a new club.
