Liverpool will wrap up their pre-season build-up this evening with not one but two 90-minute friendlies against Athletic Bilbao at Anfield, offering Arne Slot a final chance to assess his squad before next weekend’s Community Shield showdown with Crystal Palace.
The double-header kicks off at 17:00 BST, followed by a second fixture at 20:00 BST, giving Reds fans a full evening of action.
After a mixed pre-season tour that included a 4-2 defeat to AC Milan in Hong Kong and a 3-1 win over Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan, Slot will be eager to see his side finish their warm-up campaign on a high.
With Alisson Becker not partaking due to personal reasons and Joe Gomez sidelined with an Achilles injury, there are some spots open for fringe players to impress.
For Bilbao, Ernesto Valverde’s side arrive on Merseyside in underwhelming pre-season form, suffering defeats to PSV Eindhoven and Racing Santander after qualifying for the Champions League by finishing fourth in La Liga last season.
Liverpool XI for the first game, with more than a few senior players missing:
Woodman, Jones, Stephenson, Tsimikas, Robertson, Mac Allister, Elliott, Nyoni, Doak, Nunez, Ngumoha
Subs: Pecsi, Kone-Doherty, Koumas, Pilling, Danns, Lucky, Laffey
It would seem that Slot is looking to use his ‘first-team’ for the second game at 9pm BST.
