Why Leeds are absolutely fuming with Mateo Joseph, Willy Gnonto revival is off the table - opinion

Mateo Joseph’s future at Leeds United seems decided, but the next step is taking its time.

With Daniel Farke already confirming that the Spaniard isn’t a part of his plans, it’s clear that the striker must find a new club.

Whether that’s permanently or not is another question, as Joseph going on loan is ‘very likely’ this summer.

Real Betis remain the main suitors, and after Farke said Leeds can’t afford to keep Joseph due to his attitude, Betis will no doubt see this as their opportunity to strike.

Well, a new update has only added to the Whites’ fury as the 21-year-old is making matters trickier than they need to be for Leeds.

Leeds United have ‘immense’ anger with Mateo Joseph

It’s a real shame that Joseph’s career at Elland Road has taken this turn, but he hasn’t done himself any favours by not involving himself with the squad, as his promise will have to be shown elsewhere.

The Whites boss seems to be holding back his ferocity with the situation, and after putting the nail in the coffin for the Spain under-21 international, surely his desire to move will increase.

This appears to be far from the truth according to the print edition of Diario de Sevilla (04/08/25), who report Leeds’ ‘immense’ anger towards Joseph.

Normally, when a player refuses to train or play, the club who are looking to sign the player double down on their pursuit, but from both the player’s and the club’s side, there have been no developments.

Betis are still paying ‘well below Leeds’ valuation’, and it appears that the LaLiga side will pay what they want, with Joseph seemingly not making any effort to force the move, even though Farke’s stance is clear.

Despite Paraag Marathe rating Joseph ‘very highly, surely even the owner can see a toxic atmosphere being created, with the youngster needing to leave.

Mateo Joseph shouldn’t get same chance as Willy Gnonto at Leeds United

As the situation begins to take a turn for the worse, Joseph’s future should only lie with an exit.

Farke won’t want to backtrack on his claims for the striker, and after limited game time last season, surely the forward knows he isn’t wanted in West Yorkshire anymore.

A similar scenario fans will remember was when Willy Gnonto tried forcing a Leeds move in 2023 as the Italian didn’t want to play Championship football.

Nevertheless, when he didn’t get his desired move, the 21-year-old apologised and got his head down.

Now, Gnonto could be Leeds’ secret weapon this campaign, and despite Joseph having the chance to learn of Gnonto, Farke shouldn’t give him any more chances.

The Spaniard has dragged the situation out, and even if the striker doesn’t get his desired move, he’s proven to the manager and the hierarchy that his attitude doesn’t fit with what they are trying to build at Elland Road, and there should be no second chances this time around.
