Report: Newcastle now set to make move to sign £50m Premier League 'superstar'

Newcastle United could look to revive a bid for some former players, according to a report by The Times reporters, Paul Joyce and Martin Hardy - who state that the Magpies are set to 'go back in' for Marc Guehi, with Crystal Palace valuing the England star at £50million, given he only has a year left on his deal at Selhurst Park.

The club have had a poor transfer window, missing out on various key targets to elite Premier League rivals. James Trafford, a target for over 12 months, eventually opted for a return to Manchester City from Burnley, whilst striker duo Joao Pedro and Liam Delap both found their way to Chelsea, and right-wing option Bryan Mbeumo stated his preference for a move to Manchester United.

Nonetheless, Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale have joined the club as a form of reprieve, but a long-term centre-back is in their sights, and that could see Guehi join after he looked as though he would be on his way to Tyneside last summer.

The club's Saudi PIF owners don't want to spend more than £40million on the England 'superstar', and could leave it late in the window to make a move in a bid to drive his price tag down, with Palace asking for £50million.

Liverpool also hold an interest, and could trump the Toon again after they did so with Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike earlier in the summer. However, boss Eddie Howe is keen to add quality and quantity to his squad ahead of a Champions League return, and he is searching for a right-sided centre-back before the window slams shut in a months' time.

Atalanta and Italy star Giorgio Scalvini is in their sights, according to the reports, and they opened negotiations for him in June - though the Serie A club have firmly turned down any approaches, and that has seen Newcastle now look to revive a deal for Guehi.

Four bids were placed for him last summer, and Newcastle have now secured Champions League football, which is a major pull in their attempts to sign a new defender to go alongside their youthful back line of Sven Botman, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall in an overhaul in the north-east.
