Journalist spots what the Anfield crowd were chanting for Rio Ngumoha after sensational goal tonight

Liverpool fans settled in for a feast of football on Monday evening as Athletic Bilbao arrived at Anfield.

The Reds have had a good pre-season, with the football on offer generally good during games against Preston, AC Milan and Yokohama F. Marinos.

There have been some notable top performers for Liverpool across the three matches, but few have caught the eye like Rio Ngumoha.

Ngumoha caused a stir when he joined Liverpool from Chelsea as a 15-year-old last summer.

Having made his first team debut in the FA Cup in January, the youngster has been a huge part of Arne Slot’s pre-season plans, scoring a lovely goal against Yokohama.

And barely a minute into Monday’s game at Anfield, Ngumoha was at it again, bending home a brilliant effort in front of the Kop. As if in answer, the Liverpool fans chanted his name.

Liverpool fans serenade Rio Ngumoha

Most Liverpool fans will have been aware of Ngumoha before this year’s pre-season.

But for those who were not, they have been given a rude awakening over the past few weeks.

On Monday, the whole of Anfield was treated to an Ngumoha, as the former Chelsea prospect ran 40 yards before burying a wonderful finish from the edge of the area.

Just a few minutes later, Ngumoha was at it again. This time he nodded down a good cross from Ben Doak, which Darwin Nunez tucked home.

A goal and an assist within around five minutes of kick-off. And journalist Ian Doyle heard the response from the Anfield crowd.

“The LFC crowd are already chanting “Rio, Rio”,” Doyle spotted. “They were after a minute or so. Scoring and setting up goals will do that for a player, no matter how old.”

Doak quietly matches Ngumoha

Ngumoha will rightly garner most of the headlines once again after another stunning display.

However, he was not the only young player catching the eye on the Anfield turf against Athletic.

On the other side of the pitch, Ben Doak sent a reminder of the potential he has. The Scotsman got on the scoresheet and was all round live wire on the left wing.

There is a chance that Doak could leave this summer. But on this showing, Arne Slot should keep him around for another chance in the first team.

Whatever Doak did, though, Ngumoha did just that bit better. What a future he has.
