Liverpool and Newcastle could engage in a stunning swap deal this summer
It has been difficult to escape Liverpool and Newcastle United in the transfer rumour mill in recent weeks. The Premier League champions and Carabao Cup winners could both have a major say in the remainder of the summer window.
Liverpool’s interest in Magpies striker Alexander Isak has been well-documented, but the Reds may still target additional players such as Rodrygo and Marc Guehi. As for Eddie Howe’s men, they are on the search for a new striker which may then allow them to consider a departure for Isak to the Reds.
It has been a difficult summer window for Newcastle, who have seen several targets slip through their fingertips to top-six Premier League rivals. To sell Isak without a suitable replacement would throw their new season plans into complete jeopardy. Liverpool could take this chance to go to the negotiation table with the Magpies and secure a deal which could work for both parties.
Liverpool and Newcastle swap deal would stun the football world
Liverpool’s interest in Isak needs no introduction. The Swede has already surpassed 50 Premier League goals and is viewed as the man who could inspire a new dynasty at Anfield alongside Mohamed Salah and several marquee new signings such as Florian Wirtz. The 25-year-old is said to be keen on a move to the Reds and was not present at Newcastle’s pre-season tour. But reports that Liverpool will not return with a second bid for the Sweden international are said to be false.
Whether a deal progresses could depend on who Newcastle can get in to replace their prized asset - and Liverpool could have a bargaining chip up their sleeve in the shape of Darwin Nunez. The Uruguay international is reportedly up for sale this summer and has attracted attention from Serie A and Saudi Arabia. But he could be just what Newcastle need to help solve their striker problems ahead of an upcoming Champions League campaign.
Alexander Isak and Darwin Nunez swap deal could be perfect answer - Pearce agrees
Newcastle may be hesitant to put their trust in the inconsistent Nunez to replace Isak. However, the Magpies have also been linked with Brentford’s Yoane Wissa to replace Callum Wilson and if they were to secure Wissa’s signature alongside that of Nunez, the pair could rotate to form a formidable strike partnership at St. James’ Park.
New surroundings and the prospect of healthy competition at an attractive project such as Newcastle could be just what Nunez needs to find his scoring boots again. The 26-year-old netted 34 goals in 41 games for Benfica in 2021/22 while he registered 33 strikes across his first two seasons with the Reds, though he has struggled with game time under Slot.
Liverpool have been cited to value Nunez at €55million (£48m), meaning a Liverpool bid of around £100m plus Nunez could be enough to convince Newcastle to sell. Former Magpies defender Stuart Pearce recently told Chronicle Live that he believes a swap deal involving Isak and Nunez could be an answer which works out for both clubs. This could certainly be a move to watch out for.
