Newcastle United set to revive interest in £50m 'superstar' from Premier League rival after…

It wouldn't be summer without a lengthy transfer saga involving Newcastle United, and this year has been no exception, although this year it has involved a player exit.

Last year, however, it was all about a possible incoming deal that never materialised as Crystal Palace pulled Newcastle along on strings with their pursuit of Marc Guehi.

The England defender was Newcastle's top, and indeed, only target last summer, but Palace kept moving the goalposts every time the Magpies got close to making the deal happen.

In the end, it became clear that Palace were never going to sell, and Newcastle pulled out of the running with just 48 hours left in the transfer window. Just enough time to throw a £50 million bid at Nottingham Forest for Anthony Elanga, which was rejected. Newcastle got their man a year later and hope to do the same with Marc Guehi.

Newcastle remain interested in Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi is back in the headlines after weeks of silence

Marc Guehi's name was thrown out again in the summer as a potential target for Newcastle, and then Liverpool's name became attached too, so the Magpies backed off.

Now, The Times have reported that Newcastle could be ready to reignite their interest in the player who Crystal Palace chief Steve Parish dubbed a 'superstar' last year.

With just a year left on his current deal, it's expected that Guehi will be available for much less than the £70 million that was mooted 12 months ago, but he could still cost Newcastle near £50 million.

Newcastle will be hoping to beat Liverpool to Marc Guehi

Newcastle are still looking at Giorgio Scalvini from Atalanta, but could try their luck again with Marc Guehi first, as Eddie Howe is a huge fan of the England centre back and sees him as the ideal addition.

However, Liverpool's interest still remains, and their bucket of money this summer seems bottomless, so they could still beat Newcastle to the punch.

Ironically, Liverpool acquiring Alexander Isak would give Newcastle the funds to beat them to Marc Guehi, but we're sure they won't mind too much.
