Manchester United may still look to sign a new goalkeeper this summer

In a summer full of transfer situations which have needed resolving at Manchester United, one that has been particularly intriguing has been the future of the Red Devils’ goalkeeping position.

Compared with other transfer sagas involving exiled stars such as Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho, selling Onana this summer may be less of a priority for Ruben Amorim and the Red Devils. Their stance could change, however, if it becomes clear that the right option is available on the market. Recent reports may have sparked United’s interest, as a Champions-league winning goalkeeper is believed to be open to a move to Old Trafford.

Gianluigi Donnarumma open to Man United switch

In what would be a sensational move, European champion with club and country Gianluigi Donnarumma could be open to a move to a United side who finished 15th in the Premier League last season. That is according to Team Talk, who state that Donnarumma is ‘interested due to the stature of the club’.

Donnarumma is no stranger to high-pressure situations, having been first-choice at AC Milan aged 17 and then continuing to rise to the pressure at both PSG and with his national side Italy.

The report continues that United have ‘formally registered their interest’ but a permanent deal for Donnarumma is viewed as difficult to pull off unless Onana is sold first. The 26-year-old is viewed as having the ‘ideal’ age profile and his experience and attributes have also impressed the Old Trafford hierarchy as they seek to return to European football next campaign.

Will Onana be sold to make way for Donnarumma?

United reportedly view it as ‘not feasible’ to have two first-choice competing goalkeepers at the squad on permanent deals, though a loan move for Donnarumma could potentially be explored as they continue to deliberate over the future of Onana, whom they signed for £47.2million from Inter Milan in 2023. This situation is unlikely to be resolved imminently.

Onana has been injured during pre-season which may have hindered any possibility of a move away, though the player has previously expressed his desire to remain with the club for the new season. The genuine possibility of a move for Donnarumma could change things from the club’s perspective. United reportedly value Onana at around £30m while a move for Donnarumma, who has just a year remaining on his PSG contract, may cost a similar figure.
