The deal is done, and De'Aaron Fox is locked up with the long-term contract he deserves. We all knew this moment was coming when the trade with Sacramento was made at the beginning of February, just days before the deadline. Today, August 4th, was the day after Fox became eligible for a max extension, and the Spurs got the deal done.
BREAKING: San Antonio Spurs star De'Aaron Fox has agreed to a four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension with the franchise, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN. The max deal secures Fox's future in San Antonio through the 2029-30 season. pic.twitter.com/vvCdMExAbt

Now that the Silver and Black have their franchise point guard under contract for the foreseeable future, he can truly settle into his new city. There are big plans for this team led by Victor Wembanyama. Their partnership will largely determine the success of this ball club, and that's a gamble that's sure to pay major dividends.
Fox is the perfect guard for San Antonio
Former Nets GM and NBA cap expert Bobby Marks said that the Spurs needed to be careful with giving D. Fox this type of money because he's "not a top-25 player." But there are several problems with that statement. The first question I'd have for Marks is, according to whom?
The most recent player rankings we have for the upcoming season are from The Ringer and HoopsHype. The Ringer's rankings have Swipe ranked 26 right behind Jaren Jackson Jr, which is debatable, but HoopsHype's list puts Fox at 24.
When you make blanket statements about where a player should or shouldn't be ranked, you should be tasked with naming the players you'd place in front of him. Even if you do that, when he's that close to that range in the minds of basketball observers, you're splitting hairs. It's all subjective.
You can look at all the metrics you want, but it truly comes down to the value that a player brings to his current situation. He brought a ton to Sacramento, but that franchise is and has been a dumpster fire for a long time. Things are completely different in San Antonio, and his skill set is exactly what this team, especially Victor Wembanyama, needs.
His downhill speed is going to put so much pressure on defenses; they'll have two very difficult choices to make. Let Fox attack the paint against a solo defender who will be on their heels, or let Wembanyama catch the ball with space. Either way, you're in a compromising situation.
The defense has been addressed by adding Dylan Harper, Carter Bryant, and Luke Kornet. Stephon Castle and Jeremy Sochan are still young, so they're still improving. They'll come back and thrive on that end of the floor as well. But the team needs a veteran to be the head of the snake as they make their push for the playoffs, and Fox just entered his prime. It's perfect.
