Liverpool dealt blow in race for La Liga superstar

Liverpool face Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

The season curtain-raiser sees the Premier League champions face the FA Cup winners, with the league season then starting the following week.

Arne Slot’s side will face Bournemouth on the opening night of the new campaign, before travelling to the North East to face Newcastle United.

This summer has been a busy one at Anfield, with the Reds having spent heavily in an effort to maximise their chances of retaining their Premier League crown next term.

It appears, however, that Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of one particular star.

As reported by Spanish outlet AS via TEAMtalk, Real Madrid star Rodrygo has decided to stay put at the Spanish giants despite significant interest from elsewhere.

The Brazilian has been heavily linked with a move away from the Spanish capital in recent weeks, with his place as a guaranteed starter no longer certain since the arrival of Xabi Alonso.

Both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur were interested in the Brazil international, the report claims, however the 24-year-old is now set to stay put with Real beyond the end of the current transfer window.

Rodrygo joined Real Madrid from Brazilian side Santos back in 2019 and has since played 270 times for the club across all competitions, scoring 68 goals and registering 51 assists.

The Brazil international is under contract until the end of the 2027/28 season, and the report suggests that the player has now decided to attempt to regain his starting spot under Alonso, who started the winger in just one of Real’s matches at the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this summer.
