Newcastle United have been offered an 11th-hour chance to re-sign former Academy star boy Bobby Clark.

The 20-year-old left Newcastle just before the takeover in 2021 to join Liverpool in one of the last acts of the Mike Ashley era. Clark is said to be available on loan with a view to a deal that would only cost around £5million from Red Bull Salzburg - and arrives back in the UK on Tuesday to discuss deals with clubs with one option close.

ChronicleLive understands that European clubs such as Red Star Belgrade, PSV Eindhoven, Anderlecht and Hadjuk Split have enquired about the youngster. While there is also believed to have been interest from closer to home including newly promoted Sunderland and Glasgow Rangers.

Clark would be open to a move back to his old club and with Eddie Howe seeking a sixth central midfielder to back up his squad he may fit the bill. Another English club is rumoured to be close to clinching a loan deal, but that has not been finalised at this stage leaving the door ajar to the Magpies.

Howe sold Sean Longstaff to Leeds United and Joe Willock has picked up an injury which could rule him out for six weeks. Newcastle could also do with bolstering their homegrown quota of stars for the Champions League.

Howe told Chronicle Live on Monday: "We want six - and now we are down to four. So that is an issue for us and it is a position that we are looking at.

"We don't think Joe Willock's injury is serious. I gave it prognosis four to six weeks, that could be less. But I think it is an area we are looking at."

Sandro Tonali's absence against Tottenham Hotspur in the final game of the Far East tour has also shone a light on how badly Newcastle need midfielders. They are only another injury away from big problems in the engine room.

Speaking on Tonali, Howe had said: "Sandro is fine that was just a precaution from us. There are no issues there.

"He wanted to play but it was my decision to pull him back and make sure his knee is OK."
