Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt looks set to rejoin Championship club Hull City on a season-long loan deal. Our sister title Hull Live says talks between the two clubs are at an advanced stage and the transfer could be concluded this week.
It is understood Gelhardt has expressed his determination to return to the MKM Stadium after a positive spell in East Yorkshire last season. The Liverpudlian spent the second half of 2024/25 season on loan at City, playing a key role in helping the Tigers retain their Championship status. Gelhardt scored five goals and quickly established himself as a fans favourite.
It is believed Gelhardt's salary doubled immediately following the Whites' promotion back to the Premier League, owing to a clause in his Elland Road contract, but common ground has been found to facilitate the move. Gelhardt's United deal is due to expire in the summer of 2026 but he has been given the green light to find a new club before the transfer window closes on September 1.
Gelhardt, who was heavily linked with a move to Rangers over the weekend, has not featured in any of United's public pre-season outings this summer as they gear up for their Premier League return, The vesatile attacker has played in behind-closed-doors matches as part of his fitness schedule.
Barring any late issues, Gelhardt's move to City could be finalised in time for him to be involved in their Championship opener at Coventry City this weekend. Gelhardt would provide valuable firepower in the top third of the pitch as City head coach Sergej Jakirovic looks to address their goal-scoring problems.
City have so far only captured striker Enis Destan, but are also working on deals to sign Gelhardt and free agent Oli McBurnie. A move for Croatian frontman Matija Frigan is on the backburner for now, pending the outcome of the City's appeal against an English Football League three-window fee restriction. Their appeal is due to be heard tomorrow.
