Report: Newcastle now set to make approach to sign 'prolific' striker amid Sesko 'uncertainty'

Newcastle are planning to make a surprise move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Goncalo Ramos, journalist Steve Kay has claimed.

The Magpies are looking to sign a new centre-forward before the transfer deadline on September 1 and have reportedly identified the Portuguese international as an alternative to top target Benjamin Sesko.

Battling Manchester United for the 22-year-old striker, Newcastle saw their €80m (£70m) bid rejected last week and have yet to receive a definitive response from Sesko over a potential move to St James' Park.

With 'uncertainty' surrounding Sesko's arrival, Newcastle have put contingency plans in place and are set to approach 'prolific' long-standing target Ramos over a possible deal.

According to Steve Kay, Newcastle could still sign two new forwards this summer, with the possibility that Ramos could arrive alongside either Benjamin Sesko or Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, their other priority target.

Should the St James’ Park hierarchy succeed in convincing Alexander Isak to stay amid interest from Liverpool, Ramos could also be signed as a replacement for Callum Wilson, who left on a free transfer last month.

Newcastle’s interest in Ramos dates back to his days at Benfica, and it is believed the Magpies had reached an agreement on personal terms with the 24-year-old forward before PSG outbid them.

Ramos, who joined the Ligue 1 side permanently in January 2024, is under contract until June 2028.

The Portuguese striker endured an injury-hit 2024/25 campaign at the Parc des Princes, making just 12 Ligue 1 starts but still managing 10 goals in just over 1,000 minutes of playing time.
