Manchester United and Newcastle United are locked in a transfer battle to sign the same striker

The start of the 2025-26 season is less than two weeks away and Manchester United have yet to sign a new striker.

Ruben Amorim has added Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to his squad to give his Red Devils side better attacking threat. Both players have plenty of Premier League experience and scored 35 goals between them last term.

However, a new striker is still seen as a priority at Old Trafford but the Red Devils have limited funds as they prepare to take a financial hit after missing out on European football last season.

They have saw a number of targets - such as Liam Delap, Viktor Gyokeres and Hugo Ekitike - move to other Premier League clubs and the same situation could be about to unfold with yet another target.

Newcastle United make fresh bid for Benjamin Sesko

Providing an update, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said: “Newcastle have sent official bid to RB Leipzig for Benjamin Šeško worth €90m (£78.5m) package. €80m (£69.7m) plus €10m (£8.7m) add-ons on the table from.

“No decision yet from the player. Manchester United confirmed again to RB Leipzig that they will bid if Šeško picks them.”

He also notes that the Red Devils valuation of the player is currently lower than the improved offer the Magpies now have on the table with “the St James’s Park side in a strong position as things stand, after a day of positive talks held by their co-owner Jamie Reuben with Leipzig and the 22-year-old striker.”

Manchester United need player sales to help fund further business

It is no secret that Manchester United have several players they would like to sell this summer, and offloading those stars will prove key in their ability to sign more players. Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan but his full wages will be covered by the Spanish club to save the Red Devils around £14m this season.

Speaking about the players who want to leave, Amorim said: “So the market is open. There are players that clearly show they don't want to be here and that is normal. They are not bad and I'm good. I'm not bad and they are good.

“It's a simple situation that they want new challenges. So we will try to use this space to prepare the team that I think is going to be here.”
