Hurzeler reveals what he will work on before Albion's final friendly

Defensive chores will be high on the agenda after the late collective lapses which saw his side draw 2-2 at Southampton rather than win comfortably.

That will not be aimed purely at what now looks his probably starting back four.

The collective unit will be reminded of their responsibilities as a result of events at St Mary’s – and not just the last 20 minutes.

Hurzeler was far from impressed with how his side, who should have led by more than 2-0, ended the game.

There was actually some decent last-ditch defending to preserve the draw.

Jan Paul van Hecke threw himself at a couple of dangerous balls and the three youngsters sent in alongside him all did their bit to head off, for all that it mattered, a defeat.

But Hurzeler was not happy with his side’s game-management, which was something which cropped up at times last season.

And he mentioned how poorly they coped with changes made by Southampton.

The Seagulls boss said: “We dominated the opponents in possession, out of possession.

“We controlled every phase of the game and I think we should have led by much more.

“But that’s football. If you don’t score, you get punished.

“We weren’t able to handle the shape of Southampton, the change of formation.

“We have to work on this but we still have two weeks.”

And so the next stage of preparation can be tackled during this long week between fixtures seven days apart.

We all look for clues from pre-season while also reining ourselves in about reading too much into friendly games.

For all that it is worth, Albion played a lot better in possession and going forward at Southampton than they did in the comparable fixture last summer.

That was the 1-0 win at QPR in the penultimate friendly before returning to the Amex to play competition from Europe.

There was not much to get excited about in that game in West London.

As at St Mary’s, Yankuba Minteh played a big part in establishing the lead.

On that occasion he chased defenders and ended up winning the ball and forcing a penalty which Danny Welbeck converted for the only goal.

QPR, who offered precious little threat, then went into a Championship season which saw them win just one of their first 16 fixtures.

If we are looking for context and perspective, one suspects Southampton will do far better than that in the first 16 games of their coming Championship campaign.

So now we await the final dress rehearsal, at which stage last year Albion beat Villarreal 4-0 with Minteh and Welbeck among the scorers.

Wolfsburg finished 11th in the Bundesliga last term and will be one week from their first competitive fixture, which is a cup tie against lower-league opponents.

The German top-flight does not get under way until August 23.

Albion host Fulham in the Premier League a week on Saturday.

Speaking at St Mary’s, Hurzeler said: “There will be players (against Wolfsburg) who will play the week after against Fulham, that is for sure.

“We are not sure yet who will start against Wolfsburg.

“They are a good team, they have a good style of play. We have to prepare well.

“We have to use the training week now to work on the defence, to improve the defence.

“Then I am sure we will be ready for Wolfsburg.”

What sort of test they get at the Amex remains to be seen.

Wolfsburg were 4-0 down when their latest friendly, away to Feyenoord, was cut short in the 79th minute due to a medical emergency in the crowd.

Before that, they went down 1-0 to Espanyol.

Saturday’s main event at the Amex will be preceded by a behind-closed-doors meeting between Seagulls and Wolfsburg.

That will give as many players as possible the chance to have significant playing time and is similar to what happened between Albion and Southampton last Saturday.
