Misfiring Man Utd striker could be'cornerstone'of Ten Hag's Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen head coach Erik ten Hag is supposedly determined to reunite with misfiring Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund in the summer transfer window.

The Denmark international was brought to Old Trafford by the Dutchman in the summer of 2023, but he has failed to live up to expectations in Manchester and is already being tipped to leave.

Hojlund has affirmed that he wants to stay and fight for his place in Ruben Amorim's system, but the Red Devils are expected to sanction his departure for the right price in the summer window.

A return to Italy has been strongly mooted for the former Atalanta BC starlet, who is said to have captured the interest of Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Napoli and Roma, although the latter have since signed Evan Ferguson from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Now, CaughtOffsideclaims that Leverkusen have also thrown their hat into the ring for the Scandinavian, as Ten Hag is 'pushing hard' to bring his former Man United signing to the BayArena for the 2025-26 campaign.

Ten Hag a 'firm believer' in Man United's Hojlund

Hojlund managed a respectable 16 goals in his first season at Man United - including 10 in the Premier League alone - but he only found the back of the net four times from 32 Premier League games in 2024-25.

Nevertheless, the Denmark international had a direct hand in a praiseworthy nine goals from 15 Europa League games, scoring six of his own and setting up three more as Ruben Amorim's side suffered a gut-wrenching defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the final.

The report states that Ten Hag remains a 'firm believer' in Hojlund's qualities and potential despite his underwhelming Premier League performance, and he wants to make him the 'cornerstone' of his Leverkusen squad.

The German giants currently have Victor Boniface and Patrik Schick vying for starts up front, and the former recently committed his future to the club after a winter move to Saudi Pro League giants Al-Nassr collapsed.

Meanwhile, Schick signed a new long-term contract with Leverkusen until 2030 as recently as Monday, but Hojlund would seemingly have a good chance of displacing both men at the tip of the Werkself attack thanks to his relationship with Ten Hag.

Which club are the 'most aggressive' in Hojlund transfer race?

However, Leverkusen are just one of multiple teams interested in prising Hojlund away from Man United, as Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt are also understood to be keeping a close eye on the situation.

Over in Italy, meanwhile, Inter are allegedly being the 'most aggressive' in their pursuit of Hojlund, whom they have already tried to sign this summer as part of an audacious double deal involving fellow struggling striker Joshua Zirkzee.

The Nerazzurri's proposal was turned down by Man United, though, as while Inter were offering a loan deal with an option to buy in 2026, the Red Devils want to offload Hojlund permanently at the earliest opportunity.

Man United have supposedly named their price for the 22-year-old, who is still under contract at the Theatre of Dreams for another three seasons.

Hojlund boasts a total of 26 goals and six assists in 95 matches for the Red Devils, but he was only a late substitute in their recent 2-2 draw with Everton in the Premier League Summer Series.
