A look at how Tottenham can replace the injured James Maddison with a new signing.

Tottenham have a new transfer need after the injury James Maddison suffered during the weekend’s friendly draw with Newcastle United. Maddison returned from a knee injury in Asia only to suffer a worse injury to the same knee.

The nature of the injury has not yet been confirmed, but it looks as though it could be a very serious injury that will keep the attacking midfielder out for months. Thomas Frank has said: “It’s most likely he has a bad injury, we need to be honest with that, it’s the same knee as the previous injury. Of course, we don't know the full assessment of it, so we need to see that.”

Spurs are now going to have to sign a new attacking midfielder, and with Morgan Gibbs-White out of the question, the options are limited. Gibbs-White has now signed a new contract with Forest, and the East Midlands side have also snapped up another in-demand attacking midfielder in Dan N’Doye, who is also naturally off the table. Here we take a look at some of the potential options for Spurs.

Eberechi Eze

The Crystal Palace star is yet to move on despite interest from Arsenal. His £68million release clause has lapsed, but Palace are likely to still ask for a similar fee if they are to sell.

Arsenal will reportedly seek a £55milion deal, but it’s unclear how the Eagles respond. Tottenham could decide to hijack any Arsenal deal and offer Eze Champions League and a regular starting spot in his favoured position. Arsenal may not be able to offer the latter given the competition they have within their squad. Eze will be the most pricy option on this list, though.

Jack Grealish

Grealish is on the lookout for regular football ahead of next summer’s World Cup, with the attacking midfielder having struggled for minutes last season.

City may be open to a loan this summer, which could suit Spurs given the finances involved in the deal. Grealish would command a fee of around £40million, but he also has very high wages, and it’s unclear whether he is willing to drop them. Then again, he might have to if he wants to land a new club.

Conor Gallagher

Gallagher has been linked with Tottenham in the past, during his Chelsea days, but it’s unclear whether Atletico Madrid will consider selling this summer. An asking price of around £43milion has been mentioned, with Atletico having signed him for £34million when they signed the England international from Chelsea.

At this stage, it seems as though Tottenham want a player with Premier League experience to fill the void left by Maddison, and a big void at that. It’s also clear that Spurs are going to have to part ways with a significant chunk of money to replace Maddison.
