Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has made a confident prediction about Bryan Mbeumo's future after the forward celebrated his debut for the club during the pre-season tour of the US.
After a long, drawn out negotiation saga between Brentford and United, the Reds finally got their man just a day before they flew out to America for the Premier League Summer Series. Having not been in training from the beginning of July like his teammates, Mbeumo was given a cautious introduction to the first-team.
Ruben Amorim did not select him for the victories over West Ham and Bournemouth but introduced him from the start alongside Matheus Cunha up front for the draw against Everton. The 25-year-old was replaced at half-time but will be hopeful that he can play further minutes in the Reds' final pre-season fixture against Fiorentina on Saturday.
Despite his limited game time, Mbeumo reflected positively on the tour, posting on Instagram: "US Tour done. Happy to have made my debut with the team.
"Thanks fans for the massive support." Among those to reply were his former Brentford teammate Ivan Toney who wrote: "Let’s go my son," while Diogo Dalot replied: "Allezzzz Bryan."
However, it was Fernandes who made a confident prediction for his new teammate, as he wrote: "First of many." Exactly how Amorim will utilise Mbeumo moving forward remains to be seen.
The Portuguese head coach could choose to play him alongside another centre-forward up top like Cunha or Rasmus Hojlund, or he may play deeper in one of the No.10 positions instead. We should get a clearer idea of Amorim's plans Saturday at Old Trafford.
