Report: £10m wonderkid could now 'do an Alan Shearer' and join Newcastle United

Newcastle United’s priority is to get the Benjamin Sesko deal over the line, but there is plenty more business for them to do before the summer transfer window closes.

Following Sean Longstaff’s move to Leeds, Eddie Howe has made it clear that Newcastle want to sign a midfielder.

That need has only intensified since Joe Willock suffered an injury during the friendly defeat to Team K League. As it stands, the Magpies only have four senior centre-midfielders available.

However, Newcastle United do have the opportunity to bring a fresh face in.

Newcastle United offered Bobby Clark opportunity

It could actually be an old face, with Bobby Clark linked with a move back to St James’ Park.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United have been offered the chance to sign Clark on loan from RB Salzburg.

The 20-year-old midfielder joined the Austrian side from Liverpool for £10million in 2024, but could already be on the move again.

The Chronicle state a loan deal with a £5million option to buy is on the table, with one English club ‘close’ to striking an agreement.

However, the Chronicle add that a transfer is not finalised and that there is an opportunity for Newcastle United to swoop in and sign a player who is ‘open’ to moving back to Tyneside.

What Lee Clark said about Bobby Clark returning to Newcastle United

That will delight former Newcastle United midfielder Lee Clark, who is Bobby’s father.

During an interview in 2024, Lee Clark made it very clear that he would love his son to return to Newcastle United at some point in his career after leaving to join Liverpool in 2022.

“Absolutely,” Clark told the No Tippy Tappy Podcast when asked if he still dreams of his son playing for Newcastle United.

“I don’t know how many fathers and sons have done it for the club. I was lucky enough to do it 265 times.

“Who knows, he might have to do an Alan Shearer and come back. But yeah, that would be my ultimate dream. Definitely.”

The phrase ‘do an Alan Shearer‘ refers to the Newcastle United legend’s move back to Tyneside in 1996.

Having made his name at Southampton and Blackburn Rovers, Shearer signed for Newcastle in 1996. He became the world’s most expensive player, signing for his boyhood club after not being picked up by the Magpies’ academy as a youngster.

While Clark was in the Newcastle United youth setup, he decided to take his career elsewhere. He could now have the chance to return, and it will be interesting to see whether Eddie Howe takes the opportunity to add Clark to his midfield.
