Andre Onana provides update on injury ahead of the 2025/26 season, ‘it’s been a few difficult weeks…’

Andre Onana has missed Manchester United’s first three pre-season friendlies after suffering a hamstring injury earlier this summer.

Every Manchester United player will be aiming to improve after a turbulent 2024/25 campaign that resulted in Ruben Amorim’s side suffering defeat in the Europa League final before they finished 15th in the Premier League.

Amorim has thus far added three new signings to United’s first-team and will hope they can help his team win more matches this season. Diego Leon joined after agreeing to a deal with the Red Devils in January, while Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo signed from Premier League clubs.

At the same time, United fans will be expecting a big improvement from the players who were responsible for last season’s shortcomings. It will be a chance for these players to open a new chapter, and they should be aiming to silence their critics by proving them wrong.

Andre Onana hoping to be fit for Premier League opener

One player who needs to improve in a United shirt vastly is Andre Onana.

The Cameroon international has endured a difficult first two years at Old Trafford, after joining United from Inter Milan in a transfer worth £47.2 million.

Onana sustained a hamstring injury before the team returned to Carrington for training this summer, only to miss the first four games of pre-season.

It remains to be seen if Onana will be fit to face Fiorentina in the final pre-season friendly on Saturday, but he is aiming to return in time for the Premier League opener against Arsenal a week later.

Onana caught up with former United goalkeeper Tim Howard on NBC Sports and Sky Sports to discuss his fitness levels and expectations for his return to action.

“I feel good, I feel great,” Onana said, as quoted by ManUtd.com. “It’s been a few difficult weeks but yeah, hopefully, I will be back for the start of the season.

“I’m enjoying the training with my guys and we are looking forward [to the start of the season].”

United have conceded goals in three of their four pre-season friendlies thus far, with Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton both getting minutes on the pitch.

Onana also told Howard that he believes there is a strong sense of togetherness about the team on pre-season.

"We are together… we're going to be hard to beat!"

Last chance for Onana

It looks like Onana will be staying at United, despite rumours regarding a move to Saudi Arabia earlier this summer.

That means the Cameroonian shot-stopper will get another chance to keep his status as United’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Bayindir and Heaton were unable to challenge Onana for a place in the line-up last season, but United have been linked with an array of keepers this summer, including Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.

Amorim predicts Onana is going to be better this season, which means he has the backing of his head coach to overcome the obstacles that stand in his way.
