Rio Ferdinand shares what happened in his meaningful interaction with Man Utd star Mason Mount during the pre-season tour
Mason Mount has been able to pick up important minutes during the pre-season tour after his second full season at Old Trafford was impacted by injuries once again.
Ruben Amorim is believed to be a big fan of the Erik ten Hag signing, despite Mason Mount struggling to replicate his scintillating Chelsea form at Manchester United.
Mount has shown moments of brilliance for United amid his injury-hit spell and the former Chelsea ace came off the bench and scored a stunner against Everton.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Rio Ferdinand has said that he personally touched base with the 26-year-old England international during the US leg of United’s summer tour.
The 46-year-old United legend explained: “I saw him out in Chicago and that’s one of the things I said to him, like, ‘How are you feeling?’
“Because he’d been robbed of any minutes really, through injury, and it’s been really, really disappointing to see.
“Take you back to when you played – being injured and in the shadows. I never had that at a new club, but when I was at a club – that is so depressing.”
“It can take your soul away at times, and I’m sure he’s been in some dark moments.”

Rio Ferdinand has not lost faith in the role that Mason Mount could have for Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim
Mason Mount, who is United’s current No 7 shirt holder, only managed to score three times in 26 appearances across all competitions in the 2024-25 season.
The Three Lions international earned high praise from pundit Ferdinand for his individual “quality,” including his work ethic and overall playing ability as a player.
“But yeah, he will be like a new signing, I think. Listen, he’s no surprise,” Ferdinand continued.
“Whenever he’s been fit in his career, he’s played – Chelsea especially – and the managers have played him.
“When they won the Champions League, [he was] one of the most important players.
“He has the quality, he has the work ethic, he has the legs, he has the ability to be a really, really good top player.”
Mount arrived at Old Trafford in 2023 under former United manager Erik ten Hag, with the Red Devils paying Chelsea an initial transfer fee of £55m to sign him.
