De'Aaron Fox signs max contract extension with Spurs

Former Kentucky guard De'Aaron Fox has agreed to a 4-year, $229 million maximum contract extension with the San Antonio Spurs through the 2029-30 season, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.

Fox, who was traded to San Antonio from Sacramento last February, averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists in 17 games for the Spurs last season before having season-ending surgery in March to repair tendon damage in his left pinky finger suffered in training camp last October. In 62 games for both the Spurs and Kings, Fox averaged 23.5 points, 6.3 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game.

Fox set Sacramento's 64-year-old franchise single-game scoring record, scoring 60 points in the Kings' 130-126 overtime loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in November.

He made 22 of 35 shots, including 6 of 10 three-pointers, and 10 of 11 free throws in 44 minutes to best Jack Twyman's previous mark of 59 points set in 1960. Fox's 60 points were the most since the franchise moved to Sacramento in 1985 and topped his previous career-high of 44 set on three separate occasions. He also added seven assists and three steals.

The former Wildcat scored 39 of his 60 points in the second half as the Kings rallied from a 20-point deficit to force overtime. Nikola Jokic was the only other NBA player with a 60-point game last season.

Fox became just the third former Kentucky player to score 60 or more points in an NBA game, joining Devin Booker (70, 62) and Karl-Anthony Towns (62, 60). He is the fourth former Wildcat to own an NBA franchise single-game scoring record, joining Booker (Phoenix Suns), Towns (Timberwolves), and Anthony Davis, who scored 59 with the New Orleans Pelicans in 2016.

Along with Luka Doncic, Fox is only one of only two NBA players to average 20 points, 5 assists and 1 steal in each of the past six seasons, is only one of four players in the league with 10,000 points, 3,000 assists and 700 steals since entering the NBA in 2017-18, where he is joined by Jokic, James Harden, and Russell Westbrook.

In 2022-23, Fox was named the inaugural NBA Clutch Player of the Year after averaging 25.0 points, 6.1 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game in his sixth NBA season while starting all 73 regular-season games in which he appeared in leading Sacramento to its first Pacific Division title and Western Conference Playoffs appearance since 2006.

Fox, who was also named to his first All-Star Game and was a Third Team All-NBA selection, led all NBA players in clutch scoring with 180 points, shooting 54.8% in clutch moments during the regular season.

Over eight NBA seasons, Fox holds career averages of 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.4 steals over 531 games with 517 starts.

As a freshman at Kentucky in 2016-17, Fox averaged 16.7 points, 4.6 assists and 4.0 rebounds en route to being named First Team All-SEC, SEC Tournament MVP and NCAA All-South Regional after scoring a career-high 39 points in an 86-75 win over UCLA in the Sweet 16.

His 39 points were the most-ever by a UK freshman in the NCAA Tournament. Fox is one of just three players in Kentucky basketball history to record a triple-double, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 115-69 win over Arizona State.

Fox was selected by the Kings with the No. 5 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.

Coming out of Cy Lakes High School in Katy, Tex., Fox was ranked as the No. 6 overall prospect and No. 2 point guard in the 2016 class by the industry average 247Sports Composite. The McDonald's All-American chose the Wildcats over Kansas, Louisville, and LSU.

247Sports National Basketball Director Eric Bossi ranked Fox as his 11th-best point guard prospect of the past 25 years.
