Manchester United want to sign RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko before the end of the summer transfer window. Ruben Amorim's side are in the market for a new No.9 and have made the Slovenian their top striker target.
Sesko, 22, who scored 21 goals in 45 matches for Leipzig last season, has emerged as one of the most sought-after attackers in European football. Arsenal were interested in a move earlier this summer, but the Gunners instead went for Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP. Meanwhile, Newcastle United are pushing to bring Sesko to St James' Park and have so far made two offers to Leipzig, with the second coming in at around £78.4 million.
United have since responded with a bid of their own and are hoping to beat Newcastle in the race for Sesko. At the moment, however, Sesko has not made it clear on which is his preferred destination.
So, with this in mind,Manchester Evening Newshas taken a look at the latest news around Sesko...
United make bid
Manchester United have submitted a £65.2m plus £8.7m add-ons bid to RB Leipzig for Benjamin Sesko, according to The Athletic. Last month, it was reported that the Reds were prioritising a move for the Slovenia international if they were to sign another striker this summer and informal contact was made with the Bundesliga club.
Now, United have made their first official offer to Leipzig for Sesko. The Reds' overall package is expected to reach around £73.9m should the former Red Bull Salzburg man achieve the additional bonuses.
Second Newcastle offer
On Monday night, it was reported that RB Leipzig received an improved offer from Newcastle United to sign Benjamin Sesko this summer. The Magpies lodged a first bid - believed to be worth up to £69.8m - for Sesko on Saturday but Leipzig felt that was insufficient and rejected it.
Newcastle have since come in with a second proposal in the region of £78.4m including add-ons, as per The Athletic. It's unknown whether that is going to be enough for the Bundesliga side to accept and allow him to leave. At the time, United hadn't come in with a formal approach for the attacker.
Sesko plan
According to German outlet BILD, Sesko is set to train away from the main group of Leipzig players on Tuesday due to the ongoing speculation.
BILD also reported that a bidding war works in Leipzig's favour, but the club 'also needs quick facts to further advance the restructuring'.
