Chelsea board urged to make move and sign big Premier League star

Former CHELSEA star Emmanuel Petit has urged his old club to sign Manchester United transfer target Emiliano Martinez this summer, amid reports that the big Argentine is a player the Villians may have to sell.

Unai Emery’s side missed out on qualifying for the elite European competition after their final defeat against Manchester United consigned them to Europa League football next season. Villa had an impressive run in the tournament last season, beating the likes of Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig before they were knocked out by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in a dramatic quarter-final.

However – Villa were hit with an unconditional €11million fine for a breach of the organisation’s financial regulations, including €5m for failing to comply with the football earnings rules plus €6m for breaching the squad costs rules, and may need to sell some top players.

Man United have been linked with a move for Martinez, but petit has opened up and claimed that CHELSEA could make a move for the World Cup winner: ‘Emiliano Martinez would be an inspiration in the Chelsea dressing room,’ Petit told EscapistMagazine.com ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

‘I have criticised his behaviour in the past but he knows what it takes to win titles, he has that experience. He can inspire other players and he has all the qualities needed of a top goalkeeper.

‘He would be a very good signing for Chelsea and 32 isn’t old for a goalkeeper.

‘I think he’d link well with Enzo Maresca and the players already at the club.

‘One fear I have is for Aston Villa, I am worried about them with top players leaving the club, I’m not sure where it will leave them next season.’
