Liverpool get positive boost after Trey Nyoni hamstring worry

Trey Nyoni does not appear to have suffered major damage to his hamstring after being substituted in Liverpool’s 4-1 friendly win over Athletic Club.

Nyoni was brought off with 67 minutes on the clock having started at centre-back for a second-string Liverpool side in their first of two friendlies on Monday.

The 18-year-old looked to have picked up an issue with his hamstring, which saw him replaced by academy teammate Tommy Pilling.

But with the Liverpool first team taking part in a warm-down session at the AXA Training Centre, Nyoni was among those pictured working on Peloton bikes in the indoor gym.

That would suggest there is at least no serious concern for the teenager, who continues to work with the senior squad ahead of the Community Shield.

Another player who looked to have suffered the effects of a high-tempo encounter with Athletic Club was Luca Stephenson, who limped off at the end of Liverpool’s 4-1 victory.

However, Stephenson was also seen with the squad on Tuesday with his complaint suspected to have been cramp.

Liverpool do have issues elsewhere in their squad, with Conor Bradley the latest to pick up an injury to join Joe Gomez on the absentee list.

Neither are currently expected to be fit for Sunday’s meeting with Crystal Palace at Wembley, though Virgil van Dijk is poised to return after missing the friendlies against Athletic Club due to illness.

Also due to be available for the Community Shield is Alisson, who has been back in Brazil following surgery for his wife Natalia.

Speaking before kickoff on Monday, Slot told LFCTV that his captain and No. 1 are both due to rejoin the group this week.

The trip to Wembley will provide supporters with more insight into the head coach’s plans when it comes to his wider squad, with only 20 players able to be involved.

It is unclear if Alisson will come straight back into the starting lineup over Giorgi Mamardashvili having missed a crucial run of preparations.

Whether either of Nyoni or Stephenson will make the selection remains to be seen, though the latter’s versatility could aid his chances as he can cover centre-back, right-back and midfield.
