Luka Doncic reportedly hopes LeBron James retires as a Laker

Luka Doncic reportedly wants LeBron James to finish his career with the Lakers.

Los Angeles Lakers made headlines this offseason by handing Luka Doncic a massive three-year, $165 million extension with a player option for 2028–29 — confirming he's the new face of the franchise.

Age: 40

Height: 203 cm

Weight: 113 kg

Birth place: Akron, United States of America

But even with the focus shifting to the 26-year-old Slovenian star, LeBron James remains a key part of the Lakers' present.

“Doncic wants LeBron to retire from the NBA with the Lakers,” a source told Dallas Hoops Journal. “Doncic, a native of Slovenia, has frequently said LeBron was the player he watched most growing up.”

“The former Dallas Mavericks superstar enjoyed playing alongside LeBron last season and believes the Lakers can contend for the championship next season, the source said.”

LeBron, now 40, opted into his $52.63M player option for the 2025–26 season, but his future is still unclear.

Despite his age, he remains highly productive. In the 2024–25 campaign, James posted 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game on 51.3% shooting, including 37.6% from three.

Doncic, who joined the Lakers midseason, averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists over 28 games with LA.

With a slimmer physique and a full offseason with the team, expectations are rising for him to lead the Lakers deep into the playoffs.
