EXCLUSIVE: Man United Told They'd Be "Throwing Money Away" If They Replace Hojlund With £78m NUFC Target

Former coach Rene Meulensteen has told Man United that if they were to sell Rasmus Hojlund and replace him with Benjamin Sesko, it would be throwing money away.

The Red Devils are pushing hard to make a move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, who is the primary target for Premier League rivals Newcastle as a replacement for Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker told Newcastle that he wanted to explore a move away.

Sesko reportedly wants a move to Man United, however, and following Newcastle’s £78m bid for him, the Red Devils have also sent an offer to RB Leipzig, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Sesko would come in and replace Rasmus Hojlund, who scored just four goals in the Premier League last year. However, it has been said that Man United could be willing to sell the Danish international for just £30m, even though they paid £72m on him just two years ago.

Man United told that selling Hojlund would be “throwing away money”

There has been reported interest from Serie A clubs in Hojlund, however, former Man United coach Rene Meulensteen believes that if United were to sign Sesko and sell Hojlund, then it would be a poor decision by INEOS.

Meulensteen told ManUNews.com via Poker Strategy: “Hojlund is still young, he’s only 22. So why don’t you say ‘give him a little bit more time, let people and coaches work more with him’. Otherwise, it’s a waste of investment.

“If you think, what did they pay for Hojliund, and then they’re going to sell him for 30 (million). I just keep thinking to myself, since that INEOS crew came in, making all these redundancies…and they keep throwing money away, it’s crazy to think.”

Instead of selling Hojlund and bringing in Sesko to replace him, Meulensteen believes that United should keep Hojlund and sign Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, who is more proven in the Premier League.

He said: “You’ve got Watkins there…he’s got Premier League experience. The other way of thinking is why don’t you bring Watkins in as an experienced player and keep Hojlund.”

That would save the Red Devils some money considering that reports have said Watkins is expected to cost around £50m this summer, considerably cheaper than Sesko will from Leipzig.
