“They gave me a proposal” – Player ends up in quick controversy after Aston Villa exit

Robin Olsen spent over three years at Aston Villa before leaving them as a free agent at the end of last season. He returned to Malmö FF to start his third spell with them.

The goalkeeper was born in Malmö and was part of their academy and returned to the club in 2012 before leaving them again for PAOK in 2015.

A year later, the goalkeeper moved to FC Copenhagen and spent over two years with them. His performances convinced AS Roma to take him away from the Danish club in 2018.

Tuesday’s edition of Aftonbladet points out that in 2016, Olsen said Copenhagen was his “favourite club”, which didn’t please Malmö fans. Therefore, he had a ‘reconciliation meeting’ with the Swedish club’s supporters whilst deciding on the move from Aston Villa.

“I respect FCK, but I feel for our fans, and they are the ones who mean something to me. It was honest and respectful, from both sides. When I was asked to show up for the meeting, there was no awkwardness. It was nice,” he said.

“[Reaction] From [FCK] their fans? No idea, I haven’t heard anything. I sat down with our fans to talk it out. That’s what matters to me. Then what other people think, that’s nothing I can do about it.”

The newspaper has been discussing FCK because Malmö FF will host them in the first leg of the Champions League qualifiers later today and the return leg will take place in Denmark next week.

When asked what he expects from the Danish club’s fans, the Sweden international said he now wants to put this saga behind him.

“It was a good time in Copenhagen. What do I expect from their fans now? I don’t know, I didn’t expect anything. The most important thing for me is that we move on, I don’t give a damn who we face. I want to play in the Champions League,” Olsen explained.

In the winter market, FC Copenhagen reportedly tried to take him away from Aston Villa.

The newspaper now reports Copenhagen tried to sign Olsen before he left Aston Villa for Malmö. This has now been confirmed by the goalkeeper itself.

“They gave me a contract proposal, that’s true. But I only had one thing in mind, and that was to come home. That’s what I feel, I wanted to go home and play for Malmö,” he added.

FCK and Malmö FF are big rivals, and Olsen is likely to be reminded of that this evening.
