The five Man Utd targets most heavily linked with Old Trafford transfers this summer

After enduring their worst-ever Premier League season in 2024/25, Manchester United are working to overhaul their squad in the summer transfer window.

United have already signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, with the pair both set for starting spots as the twin No.10s in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation.

While that is a strong start to the transfer window, Amorim will want further reinforcements before the final deadline on September 1.

Here, TEAMtalk will have the five players most heavily linked with a move to United – whether they go on to make that many more signings or not – as the summer transfer window progresses.

The evolving list starts with the most likely player to join the club before working its way down, and we’ve given an estimated transfer fee for each player based on reports.

Benjamin Sesko

Current club: RB Leipzig

Age: 22

Position: Striker

Estimated transfer fee: £73m

Adding goals to the team has been the main priority this summer, following a Premier League campaign in which United scored just 44 times.

United have made two attacking reinforcements with Mbeumo and Cunha but they are still looking for a striker to complete a new-look front three.

Sesko has emerged as their preferred option following a 2024/25 season that saw him net 21 goals in 45 appearances for RB Leipzig.

United director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, who previously worked within the Red Bull football group, is reportedly the driving force behind the pursuit.

But United aren’t the only club interested in the Slovenia international and they are facing fierce competition from Newcastle.

The Magpies have already made two bids to RB Leipzig, with the second offer worth an initial £69.7million and £8.7million in add-ons.

As revealed by TEAMtalk sources earlier this week, United have now submitted their own offer for the striker and are willing to pay £73.1million with add-ons.

The 22-year-old is reportedly open to both projects but is yet to make a final decision on his preferred destination.

Ollie Watkins

Current club: Aston Villa

Age: 29

Position: Striker

Estimated transfer fee: £60m

While Sesko is currently the first-choice target for the No.9 role, Watkins follows closely behind on United’s centre-forward shortlist.

According to reports, Amorim would actually prefer to sign the 29-year-old over Sesko due to his proven Premier League pedigree.

He made his Premier League debut for Aston Villa in September 2020 and has since registered 75 goals and registered 36 assists in 184 appearances in the top-flight.

United made contact with Villa earlier this summer to explore the prospect of a deal but baulked at their £60million valuation and shifted their focus to Sesko.

But if Newcastle win the race for Sesko’s signature, United may decide to revisit their interest in the England international.

A move to Old Trafford would also see the 29-year-old reunite with Bryan Mbeumo, having played alongide the Cameroon international at Brentford.

“We had Ollie, who I got to know over time,” Mbeumo said when asked about his former teammate. “I think he’s really complete [as a player].

“He can drop with the set or go in behind and I think this is really good for me or for a winger, because you can use his space to fit in there. And he can combine as well. So I think it’s really good.”

Gianluigi Donnarumma

Current club: Paris Saint-Germain

Age: 26

Position: Goalkeeper

Estimated transfer fee: £35m

The goalkeeping berth is a big area of concern for Amorim after Andre Onana endured another error-ridden campaign in 2024/25.

United made a loan offer for Emiliano Martinez earlier in the transfer window but that was rejected by Aston Villa, who will only sell the Argentina international for £40million.

TEAMtalk understands that United have now registered their interest in Donnarumma, who is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

The 26-year-old played an integral role in PSG’s Champions League-winning campaign in 2024/25, producing man-of-the-match displays in both legs of their semi-final against Arsenal.

But he has entered the final 12 months of his contract and is yet to reach an agreement with his current employers over a new deal.

The Parisians are seemingly preparing for life without the Italy international as they are nearing an agreement to sign Lucas Chevalier from Lille.

Senne Lammens

Current club: Royal Antwerp

Age: 23

Position: Goalkeeper

Estimated transfer fee: £17m

A deal for Donnarumma would be dependent on Onana heading for the exit door and United may have to look at some more budget-friendly options.

Fabrizio Romano revealed that United have made initial contact with Royal Antwerp for Lammens, who is valued at around £17million.

He enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough season in the Jupiler Pro League in 2024/25, recording the most saves (127) and the highest save percentage (81.4%) in Belgium’s top flight.

“Manchester United are one of the best clubs, yes,” the 23-year-old said when asked about their interest. “But you never know.

“It could also be a different club, or who knows, I might stay here. In any case, I try to keep my feet on the ground. When teams like that come along, I think you’ve earned it.”

Morten Hjulmand

Current club: Sporting CP

Age: 26

Position: Midfielder

Estimated transfer fee: £45m

Alongside two No.10s, a striker and a goalkeeper, a new defensive midfielder has also been on the agenda for United this summer.

“It was a pre-season game. The gaps between our sectors was sometimes too big,” Amorim said after United’s 0-0 draw with Leeds last month.

“We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park and you can feel it is hard to win and bring the ball.”

TEAMtalk understands that United are interested in Hjulmand, with Amorim eager to work with the midfielder again at Old Trafford.

He made 65 appearances under Amorim at Sporting CP and was appointed as their club captain after winning the Primeira Liga title in 2023/24.

The Portuguese side are looking for a fee between €50million to €60million (£43.3m / $58.2m to £52m / $69.9m) and are under no pressure to sell after cashing in on Viktor Gyokeres.
