Charlie Crew was a bright spark for Doncaster last season, and coach Grant McCann is pleased to have the young midfielder at the club once again. This time he will be on a season-long loan. McCann said that the club had been pushing for this deal to happen all summer:

“We’ve been chasing Charlie all summer – probably from the last game of the season at Notts County,” McCann said. “We made it clear to Charlie and to Leeds that we’d love to have him back. He’s highly thought of at Leeds. He’s been around their pre-season programme, played in some of the games and went away on the trip with them so we had to be patient to get him.

“I’m delighted that he’s chosen us because there was some big clubs in League One chasing him but Charlie and Leeds have decided this is the best place for him to play his football.”

How highly is Charlie Crew rated at Elland Road?

Leeds boss Daniel Farke briefly spoke on Crew towards the end of last year. He admitted that the young midfielder was very talented, and could reach the heights of Archie Gray, but called for patience as the teenager is on a good path.

“Charlie Crew has some comparisons to Archie Gray, but this is unfair. It’s not normal a 17-year-old is in the starting XI (like Archie), it is unfair to expect Charlie to do what Archie has.

“He always wants to learn though and we are working lots with him to take that next step. He is down to earth, well educated, humble and a very good football player, but there is a big step to first-team football. He is on a good path already training with the first team.”
